Here at Cawarden Brick & Tile Company, we wholly advocate the utilisation of reclaimed materials when it comes to producing DIY Christmas decorations. As reclaimed material enthusiasts, we believe that the process of crafting DIY Christmas decorations can be enjoyed by all ages. Below, we have collated four decorative ideas for your family to get their teeth into as you celebrate the festive season this year.

Recycled Card Bunting
Receiving your first Christmas card through the letterbox is a good sign that the Christmas period is well and truly upon us. Whilst they look festive in December, adorning your mantlepiece and hallways with well-wishes from loved ones, it can be a little disheartening having to gather the Christmas cards for disposal come January time. Why not instead choose to re-imagine your cards as Christmas decorations? Simple cut the front page of a card into a triangle shape and attach to a long piece of ribbon, creating seasonal bunting that can be expanded year-on-year. Alternatively, snip the cards into small, 10cm pieces to create inexpensive gift tags, ready for use next Christmas.

Reclaimed Timber Tree
Looking for a Christmas tree decoration which offers a slightly unconventional look? Take six wooden pallets and shape them into trapeziums, each one slightly smaller than the next. Lay all six pallets in size order, the largest pallet on the bottom. Attach the pallets to another plank of wood using nails, and attach the support plank to a large pallet, which will become the basis of the tree. Once you are confident that the pallets are attached soundly, you can stand the timber tree up and decorate at your discretion. The timber tree can look great with tinsel draped around its ‘branches’, but ultimately is a feature that looks striking with very little embellishment.

Wooden Stocking Holder
Creating a stocking holder from reclaimed wood is a great way to form DIY Christmas decorations. Simply purchase some railway pallets and chop them up to separate blocks that measure around 30cm. Paint the block a festive colour, add a coat hook, and you now have a fantastic addition for your mantlepiece. Get the family involved by asking them to customise their hooks; they could add initials, stickers, glitter, or chalkboard paint to creatively personalise their stocking holders.

Decorating Baubles
This year, instead of attaching colourful but plain baubles to the tree, choose to pick up transparent plastic baubles and give the Christmas tree a bespoke look. Plain plastic baubles are very versatile; they can be filled, they can be painted, and they most certainly can be subjected to lashings of glitter and ribbon should you be so inclined. Interior fashion changes all the time, and by stocking up on plastic baubles before the day of decoration each year, you are ensuring that you are always on trend at very little cost.
