Using reclaimed materials to create unique furniture pieces for your home is an excellent way to ensure that your interior themes are fresh, stylish, and most of all unique to your tastes. Repurposed furniture is a very popular option in current decorating trends, with sites such as personalised media platform Pinterest brimming with ingenious ideas and innovative uses for old furniture pieces. Yet there may be some readers who look upon repurposed furniture ideas with dismay - the instructions too complicated and the incurring cost to expensive to fully realise the project in their own home.

However, Cawarden Brick & Tile Company are advocates for DIY furniture repurposing. Below, our team have offered three repurposed furniture ideas which are inexpensive, easy to create, and look stunning when added to a vast array of home interiors.

Stepladder
A wooden stepladder can be easily transformed into a new shelving decoration with a simple lick of paint and some large nails.

  • Select the wooden stepladder you wish to use and determine the colour of paint you will be using to transform the old item. A pastel colour, such as baby blue or soft pink, is a great way to present a rustic yet stylish feel.
  • The next step is to prepare and paint the stepladder, wait for the paint to dry, and then add a second coat if you wish. The knots and grains in the wood are already striking, so remaining fairly faithful to that look whilst introducing a ‘shabby chic’ element is a guaranteed way to ensure that your stepladder will look great for years to come.
  • Once the stepladder is completely dry and the colour is to your liking, you will then need to source a selection of large nails, around 9-10 inches depending on the thickness of your chosen stepladder. Position the stepladder on the wall and safely hammer the nails through the wood to secure the stepladder to the wall.
  • The steps are now your new shelving space! Add framed photos, trinkets, or even candles to the steps and take a step back to admire your handiwork.
  •

    Chair legs
If you’re looking to get rid of your wooden chairs, why not consider repurposing the legs to make a glorious towel rack?

  • If your kitchen chair has wooden poles attached between the legs, you could use the chair as a towel rack. First, you’ll need to safely saw the chair in three quarters, using the correct equipment to make a clean cut.
  • Take the smaller piece and treat, sand, and paint it any colour you’d like.
  • Once the paint is dry, you will need to attach the chair legs to the bathroom wall in a similar fashion as the stepladder above. Try to find nails that are slightly longer than the thickness of the wood to ensure that the item is fixed securely.
  • Using a hammer or a screwdriver, carefully connect the chair legs to the wall.
  • And there you have it! Sling your hand towels over the poles to finish your custom-made towel rack.
  •

    Mattress
Don’t let your old mattress go to waste! Your mattress springs can easily be turned into a fantastic message board.

  • Carefully remove the mattress spring board from the mattress bedding and treat the metal with a wire brush to ensure that rusting does not ruin the aesthetic or integrity of the springs.
  • Attach the mattress springs to a wall using nails and a hammer. Depending on the thickness of the mattress frame, you may need multiple nails spread around the frame.
  • Once the frame is secured to the wall, you can start hanging items like hangers, pinboards, or art prints for an attractive interior feature.
  •
