Cast iron radiators are popular for a number of reasons. For starters, they are the best option for those who are looking for a vintage, charming appearance but still want the performance of modern radiators.
They have much more to offer too, though, so Cawarden Brick & Tile Company Limited run you through the different styles of cast iron radiators in this blog to help you decipher them and choose the one that’s right for you.
Rococo
To begin chronologically with the earliest, common, style of cast iron radiator - Rococo (or ‘Late Baroque’) pieces find their heritage in France in the mid-16th century. Characteristically, Rococo radiators are ornate, elegant, and opulent with scalloped details at the top, which are perfect for period homes. They can also work well with modern and bohemian interiors as they starkly contrast the former and fit well into the vintage-feel of the latter.
Most original Rococo cast iron radiators were manufactured in France in the 1890s, although these may not be as effective as modern radiators at warming your home, and it can often be a better idea to purchase ‘remakes’ that can be tailored to your requirements and can have some of the highest performance available.
Here's an example on one of our Rococo radiators.
Victorian
Moving on swiftly to a style that harks back to around 100 years later than Rococo, Victorian radiators are similar in their charm - ornate, decorative, and striking. They do, however, reduce some of the extra details of Rococo radiators and strip things back slightly to bolder patterns and simpler silhouettes.
With over 150 years of history behind them, Victorian-style cast iron radiators again fit perfectly into place in homes styled to the period. They can also be paired well with contemporary homes that lean toward vintage decor as they compliment this nicely.

Edwardian
Finally, there are also Edwardian cast iron radiators, which follow the trend of becoming simpler as the decades roll on. They very much replicate the style of Edwardian Britain, which can still be seen in the homes from this era, and is defined with clean lines and simplicity. This, naturally, means they are perfectly at home in many different types of interiors - period, modern, contemporary, vintage, etc.
The benefit of Edwardian radiators is that they are timeless and classic, which should help with longevity, even if you decide to make a drastic change with your styling.
